The city
known as the "Pearl of the Aegean" or "Beautiful
Izmir" is the third biggest city in Turkey after Istanbul
and Ankara and has the second biggest port after Istanbul.
A city of palm - lined promenades, avenues and green parks
set in sweeping curves along a circular bay, Izmir has an
exceptionally mild climate and many fine hotels.
The city is a busy commercial and industrial center, which
is the gateway to the Aegean Region. The magnificent coastline,

She is a city of worldwide recognition, embraced by Homer's love
and poetry where various civilizations flourished and people have
lived together in tolerance and brotherhood surrounded by her natural,
historical and cultural merits . The city was named after an Amazon
queen called Smyrna and was described by the famous historian Herodotus
as "the city under the most sublime blue sky in a unique climate".
The history mentions famous philosopher Aristotle telling Alexander
the Great to visit Smyrna at least once in a lifetime not to miss
anything.
IIzmir has always been the center of attention thanks to its surrounding
sacred places of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The existence
of holy places in the vicinity of Izmir, such as Mary's House proclaimed
as a noted place of Pilgrimage, the Twin Churches dedicated to the
Virgin Mary for the first time in history, the Basilica of St. John,
the Grotto of Seven Sleepers and the Seven Churches of Revelation
built to serve the spread of Christianity, has promoted the Faith
Tourism in the area. All of these churches are mentioned in the
Bible and Seljuk (Ephesus), Izmir (Smyrna), Bergama (Pergamon),
Akhisar (Thyatira), Sart (Sardis), Alaşehir (Philadelphia), and
Goncali (Laodicea) are various locations that shed light onto the
history of religions.

TRANSPORTATION |
Izmir is a highly developed city
with regard to its transportation network. Izmir has national and
international highways, railways, and airways and maritime lines.
There are two highways, which connect the city center with the peripherals:
One is between Bornova and Manisa and the other one is between Karsıyaka,
Menemen and Canakkale.
Ankara-Izmir highway merges with the traffic line of Demirci, Kula
and Usak to enter into the city center.
Aydın-Izmir highway follows the river Melez to the south of the
city and enters into the city center through Esrafpasa and Hatay
roads.
Cesme-Izmir highway is the fifth point of connection to the city
center. The Hatay- Mithat Pasa Road extends to this highway which
reaches to Urla and Cesme.

Alsancak Harbor, at a length of
314 meters, is not only a significant gateway for exports, but also
an efficient point of national and international maritime passenger
traffic. Regular cruises are all times available on Izmir-Istanbul
line but time-tables differ from summer to winter. Touristic curises
from Izmir to Mediterranean harbors are also available in summer
time.
Ferry-boats servicing among the ports of Karsiyaka,
Alsancak, Pasaport, Bostanlı, Uckuyular and Güzelyali highly facilitate
transportation in the city.
There are small ports in the nearby towns of Izmir
including Cesme, Dikili, Aliaga, Yeni Foca and Eski Foca.
Yatching Services are available for those to stay
over the night in the marina of the Cesme Bay. There is also a Ro-Ro
port for international maritime traffic in the district of Cesme.
Yeni Foca and Eski Foca ports have also a say in the touristic activity
in the city.
AAs well as being an effective contributor of the
economic activity of the city, Aliaga port hosts a variety of international
operations and is equipped with crude oil handling facilities. |
